Hi, I'm Sam,
I don’t think I’m the only one with the unsettling feeling that I won’t get to watch all the movies every made or read all the novels ever written or listen to all the music that I’d probably enjoy but will never get to hear. I’ve always loved the idea of having no matter how little an information about various things that way I can either ask intelligent questions about certain things or have the ability to contribute no matter the little I know to a conversation about certain things. And with that, not knowing everything has joined the list of things that I have an unsettling feeling about. Depending on how you look at it, ignorance can be bliss and on the other side, knowledge is indeed power. I just exercise my free will to decide what side to lean on in a particular time and for various reasons.
I’ve always thought long and hard about the concept of saving. It is something everyone agrees to be a good thing but not everyone find themselves doing it. Maybe because it’s hard and requires a good amount of discipline but I believe the economy of your geographical location also helps or makes it hard if not impossible to save. It is very easy to overthink saving, when you begin to analyze it further it may seem as though the more you see the cons the more you feel like it’s impossible to do. We make jokes and say that we remove our saving from our paychecks or whenever we get money to be prepared for the rainy days but somehow it rains the next day which means the money you put into your savings comes to save you almost immediately. As funny as it sounds, it’s also heartbreaking to have to live from paycheck to paycheck not being able to make long terms plans or investments because one is only trying to survive till the next day and not wondering about the much that will come in months if not years to come if they commit the last kobo they can actually see and use to fix one or two things in the present.
When I started saving, I completely misunderstood it. Removing a little percentage felt like it doesn’t do anything because when a need arises, it wipes out the whole thing and in most cases whatever you may have in the savings at that time won’t even be enough to handle whatever has come up and I know that generally discourages people to save in this part of the world. It begins to feel like everything is design to put you down and kill whatever zeal there is to save anything. I completely agree that for saving to mean something and be easy to do, there has to be a steady flow of income and a lifestyle that does not consume all of what comes in. There’s no point trying to save when you know that whatever that comes in doesn’t cover everything but as hard as it is, it is doable. I have chosen to look at saving as some sort of character advancement where I decide to do something for my own good and stick to it. It’s like self development, everyone is aware that doing whatever it is for self development is for the best but the process can be stretching and it’s common to stop along the way but those who see it through always come out shinning very bright.
We learn everyday whether we want to or not but the statement that we don’t know everything is very much accurate. I feel sad sometimes when I remember that I will not read all the books in the world before leaving this world but that in most cases encourages me to read as much as I can before I kick the bucket. And with that, the fact that I will not know everything has no negative effect on my desire to learn so many things. There’s an excitement attached to learning something new willingly, especially when I go looking for it. My questions feel answered with reasons and while I feel fulfilled for getting an answer and explanation, I realize that it makes me even more curious about what I just learned. Depending on the intensity of the curiosity, I might dig deep or simply forget it and wait for when I’ll need that knowledge or simply hope to stumble on the knowledge on a random day while doing something so unrelated and random.
